vaccum lines to power steering pump?

Working on 92 Celica GT with 2200. Trying to troubleshoot a no start condition. Noticed a loose vaccum line caused by a broken nipple on some sort of control valve that is scewed into the ps pump. Anyone know what this valve's purpose is?? Will have more questions on no start condition later. thanks.

That's an idle up valve that helps increase the idle at low speed or stopped conditions. It increase power to assist in steering at low speed, ie. when parking; that's why it runs into the bottom of the PS pump.

Will plugging both lines going to valve bypass this feature and stop vaccum leak? Or should I butt splice lines to one another? Thanks again.

I suppose you could butt splice it together. A lot of guys simply plug it up. It'll run without any ill effects, other than low speed steering effort is increased.

I'll try plugging both ends first. I suspect butt spicing them together would cause a continuous high idle. thx.

Plugged both lines and seems to be fine. No start was caused by a oil pump bolt backing out and dropping into timing belt. Belt was off by at least 3 cogs and pretty chewed up. Replaced all belts and water pump as long as I had it torn apart. Filed/sanded nicks out of crank pully and oil pump pully. Runs like a top now with 265k miles. Thanks again for info.

You're welcome, glad you got it worked out. Can't believe the bolt backed out like that, WTF?!
