94 Celica starting issues

Hello. My daugter just got her first car. A 1994 Celica automatic. After the car has been running for awhile it would not start up immediately. Sometimes she'd have to wait an hour or so. The local autp parts store said it needed a new starter. After replacing the starter I turned the key and absolutely nothing happened, no clicking.... I read in the manual how to test the solenoid so I ran a wire from the small wire to the + battery and with the key in the on position the car would start. Any ideas on what might be wrong????

Which engine is in the celica? If you're not sure about that, what is the trim?

it is the 2 door version with 4 cylinder if that helps. no power windows doors mirrors. I think its the st
