With winter coming up, I noticed that my heater is not blowing as hot as it should. It's warm, about 100 degrees, but should definitely be hotter. I think when I had a new speedometer cable installed the Firestone messed up my heater somehow and said it was coincidence. They mentioned something about a control unit. Any help in determining what the problem is would be greatly appreciated as us skinny guys get cold quick.

I did some reading in the old Haynes manual and it seems like heater problems should be an easy fix.
Then, I checked the heater hoses today and the inlet and outlet hoses on the firewall get hot and the valve on the inlet hose works when I turn the heat dial on the dash.
Does anyone know if the the heat dial on the dash controls anything else besides the cable going to the inlet valve???
Maybe there is another door or valve that opens to expose the heater core to the passenger compartment that is not working well enough???

This may be of some help to you. It's for the 4th Gen Celica, 5th Gen may or may not be similar....
4th Gen HEATER QUICK FIX
For a temporary quick fix:
Undo the piano-wire loop on the heater inlet located on the firewall. Push the lever all the way to the rear for heat.
Slide down by the passenger side left footwell beside the heater. Unclip the white plastic clip that holds the heater vent control arm. Push the lever all the way forward and that will allow heat to enter the cabin. (If you don't unhook the arm, intermittent contact will cause it to default back to the cold position.)
This will get you through winter but the long term fix is the soldering repair. I've done 4 already [Ugh] It ain't too bad.
Here's how it looks unclipped:
Here's the direct link to the soldering method/long term fix (originally posted by Zak062 at www.st162.com )
Thanks alot! That's perfect! I only searched the 5th gens here for heater problems and didn't find much. The 5th gen's firewall hose valve looks exactly like the 4th gen's only it's flipped 180 degrees and works in reverse. I have to check the under the dash, but that should be where the problem is. The heat works a little and the valve cable works fine as well as both inlet and outlet hoses getting hot which means the heater core is getting hot, so it must be the passenger flap not opening as much as it should. Thanks again!

The st162 website isn't working for me. I don't know why, I was just a few days ago.
Either way, I have my heater control currently taken apart and am in the process of checking connections on the board. I don't really know what to look for and without that guide I'm not sure I'll be able to figure this out on my own.
Any words of advice or any clue as to what happened to st162?
That site just went down today, worked for me last night. I would let that blonde chic on the new site be my car bitch?
It said to basically take the heater control apart to view the soldered connections and then to look for cracks. Then it said to just reheat the cracks until they melt and blend into the existing solder. It said to remove under the dash on both sides then the center console.
btw...The 5th gens don't have servos, but everything else is the same. The heater dial is directly connected to the passender compartment flap and the hose valve via cables, which both work with the car off.

Weird, not working for me either. Looks like the site has been hijacked. Try again later.
Anyways, if you have the heater control panel out, inspect the backside for tiny hairline cracks in the solder pathways, especially where it meets up with the contact points. I work under a magnifying glass.
Carefully reheat with a soldering tip so the existing solder flows back into the cracks, or add a small amount of new solder. Take your time and work slowly, it's easy to damage it and make a mess. Don't forget the piggyback board too.
That's basically what I was thinking about doing. I took the boards out right before posting that. I did some testing with a multimeter and it seemed like the obvious connections were working fine, so I don't know exactly where the fault is. Right now I've cleaned off the flux with Alcohol and am waiting for it to dry completely. Hopefully then it should be easier to spot any cracks. I may just go through and quickly remelt every solder contact on the board just to be sure though.
I hope st162 comes back, I'd only just discovered the site about three days ago and was looking forward to checking it out some more. I have an 88 Toyota Celica GT.
Today I checked the flap in the passenger compartment and it works or at least moves when I turn the dial but the heat is still not as hot as it should be. I now think there might be something wrong internally with the control unit in the passenger compartment and I will have to take a closer look. I don't think the heater core has a problem because of the outlet hose being hot, but maybe it's clogged and the hose is hot from antifreeze backing up into the hoses. I really need to pickup a cheap parts car.

I got mine fixed. Pretty much went through and remelted every solder point, while adding more wherever I found it necessary. I did notice as I was working that there were a number of points where the solder had formed hairline cracks encircling the pin. It seems that the pins didn't have enough solder initially or something. Also, I found that this only happened with the contact points where the pin was facing straight out [perpendicular] from the board. I didn't try to bend them down to make the fix more permanent, but I did add more solder to every pin of that kind just to be safe.
Thank you both, and I apologize for hijacking your thread.
Hope st162 gets back up soon. Anyway, I am trying to do the quick fix and cannot find the lever in the passenger compartment. Do I need remove the dash? Hope not! I have an 89 celica coupe. Going back outside to look again. Please help me, it is starting to get cold here!
Lisa
Lisa, you do not have to remove the dash. Just slide down into the footwell of the pax side and look under the heater console. You should be able to see it, it's right over the vent (see pic above). It's pretty clear but if you have problems, PM me and I'll help you out.
