92 Toyota Celica ST grinds in 2nd?bad synchro?

I got a 92 Toyota Celica ST, 1.6L and it grinds in 2nd gear if you shift into it at a "normal" speed.

If i shift from 1st to second slow and a little "early" it doesnt grind.

im thinking its a bad synchro? if so, would it be easier to just replace the synchro, or the entire tranny? If i can get a decent one from a salvage/junk yard, how difficult is it to change the tranny?

(not a mechanical genius, but not a complete idiot either, can do minor work, did the timing belt, intake manifold, some other easier jobs on this car).

Help anyone?

Mine does it in 2nd and 3rd and I am pretty positive it's the synchros, but I think they are a tough job. $609 for rebuild kit with sychros. Also, I read somewhere heavier manual transaxle fluid would help.
Anyone?

Tried flushing tranny, and using heavier oil along with addatitves, no help, at all. Was told by one mechanic, that once they get to a certain point, you have to just replace them to fix the issue. No point in rebuilding this tranny(pretty beat) when i can get a low milage one for $300.

Still, any opinions on what MIGHT help it without full rebuild?

Have you try RedLine full synthetic manual trans gear oil? Does it grind only when you shift fast, or does it matter?

A sticking synchro would have cause a grinding noise if you shift at a 'faster pace'. Try slowing your shift into 2nd, if it doesn't grind as much, try the RedLine fluid, it just might help your situation. If it still grinds, there isn't much else you can do externally.

Try Acura Manual Transmission Synchromesh tranny fluid. Worked wonders on mine.

If you're trying to decide between just getting another tranny, and rebuilding... just get another tranny. You'll have to drop the tranny to rebuild the synchros anyways.....

Just replace the trans. You can try syncomesh and see if it works before buying the trans. Having the synco go out is a common issues with older cars as they were design to have only one instead of the double or triple of todays cars.
