99 Celica Plug Boot Leak?

I have a 99 Celica GT convertible with 155K miles that has started to leak oil on the top of one of the plug tubes. I took out the plug wire and only oil on the top not the bottom. It is the one in front of the PCV valve drivers side 1st cylinder. I replaced the PCV valve thinking that was it but the leak reappeared. Is this an DIY job or expensive for a shop to repair. I did a search and found some info about tube leaks on other models. Thanks

Probably need spark plug tube seals. May want to reseal the valve cover and replace the plug wires too if they are original.

I have the same problem with oil on top of one of the spark plugs. Like NEO said we have to remove the valve cover and repair the tube. I have had my valve cover off before but depending on where the leak is from like the side of the tube or the bottom, I am not sure how easy it will be to fix. JB weld, rtv silicone or replacement parts?

If the oil is just around the top portion of the wires, just the tube seals should be sufficient, if it is on the spark plugs and not much on the top portion of the wire, then the tube will need to removed to reseal. However, whichever needs t be done, valve cover gasket would be a good idea.

Yes, thanks for the replies. Just wondering if the top tube seals can be removed and replaced via removing the nut without completely removing the valve cover? Thanks again

Yes, you can replace just that one seal; however, it doesn't real take very much more to replace the valve cover gasket. But it is up to you to decide.

What would happen if you do not fix this problem? could it become so bad that it prevents spark?

Just lose a little oil and compression, that is all. The oil is on top of the plug, and does not make it down past the threads to the electrode.

Just lose a little oil and compression, that is all. The oil is on top of the plug, and does not make it down past the threads to the electrode. There is a special $60 tool sold for tightening the tubes or a pipe wrench is possible.
