Fuel gauge indicator is gone

My son has a 2001 Celica and when he started it this morning, there was no fuel indicator needle on the gauge. fuel light came on as well. (Yes,he did have fuel in the car!) Any suggestions?

There is fuel tank sender inside the gas tank It works by moving a float with the level of the fuel, the sensor could be bad. Also check the wiring to the sensor.

The sender is accessed from the top of the fuel tank. Remove the rear lower seat to view a cover, remove the cover to view the access cover to the tank.

The autozone website at www.autozone.com may have a self help section on changing the fuel pump. The sensder is mounted with the fuel pump.
