2nd Generation '79 Celica

i have a '79 Celica with a 20r engine in it and im having problems. today i drove to work which is about 20 miles and had no problem (all highway). When i was coming home after about 10-15 miles it started sputtering and jerking around. since its a 5-speed, i put in the clutch to give it some gas. No Luck. its was like it was flooded. but i dont c how. i pulled over on the side of the road and by that time it shut completely off. so i cranked it back up, no problem. gave it gas, nothin happened out of the ordinary. so i took off, when i got up to 50-60 mph it started sputtering again. luckily i was kinda close to home so when i got there i opened the hood to look for anything. whoever had the car before me put a small lil filter on the top of the engine just behind the oil cap on top of a small hole and there was liquid all around it.
now it wont even idle by itself.

Probably a very easy fix, but i would like someone to tell me exactly what is wrong with it.

Thanks in advance.

Was the fluid oil?
That would mean the crankcase is getting pressurised and pushing the oil up through the breather.
Not sure what would cause that.
Might be a bad piston ring letting gasses through.

Apart from the fluid, those symptoms often mean a blocked fuel filter.

No need to feel dumb.

Thats a nice looking Celica, what part of Florida you located? I use to have a 1980 Celica GT and yours just brought back a few memories cause mine was the same color, minus the stripes. Anyways, its cool that you got your fuel problem figured out.

Glad it is solved. Still, wanted to comment on how nice your engine bay looked. Nice job.

Nice Celica. Its always good to see clean ones left. I live in DeLand, and although I love the 2nd gen Celicas, I just picked up a super clean no-rust-ever 78 Cressida Station Wagon. If you decide to sell your car, keep me in mind. Dan Friend dfriend001@cfl.rr.com
