Canada 1991 Toyota Celica GT - Starter or Ignition Problem??

Before changing the starter I would start the vehicle (it would happen on the odd time) and the starter made the same sound as if you were already running the car and then turning the key to start it. You know that screeetching sound. Well I figured it was the starter. After installing the starter, it seemed to start faster & no sound. But again it would happen on that odd time. Well it happened again. So is it the starter or now the ignition? Any ideas? To start it in this type of condition, I would try it 1st – get the screeeetching, then a 2nd time again the screeeetching and then finally the 3rd it will start. Again – this only happens the odd time. Seems to happen more when its colder.

Did you check the ring gear, the gear that the starter drive meshes with?

Does it sound like grinding? It could be the flywheel is missing some teeth in the gear.
