starter and flywheel spin, but car wont start

I have an 88 Celica GT. I tried to start the car a few days ago and all I got was the sound of the starter. I thought it might have been the starter so I swapped it with a new one. Still didn't work.
While pushing the car in gear i can see the flywheel spin through the starter housing. And when the ignition is turned the starter does turn the flywheel. I just cant hear the motor trying to start.
Could the timing belt be affecting this? Or something else?
I could really use the help at this point.
