Gen5 help with ignition timing... 5sge

HI all, i'm new here.... but thought i would reach out to yas...

was going to ring the mechanic mate of mine but will call his work tomorrow morning anyways to get all the opinions and possible solutions...

Heres my prob.

I just finished building my 5sge engine... shes fitted... just turned the key... and she fired up, needs to be checked though, there must be a vacuum leak in the intake manifold as she revved up to 3000rpm and sat there... Not very good but after 9 weeks of not hearing her... none the less it was a nice tease.

i turned her off... played with her for a bit... may have bumped the dissy...
the ignition leads are in the right order and are all plugged it...

from from there on.. i coudln't get her to start again... couple of turns, i get a back fire, smoke come out of the intake manifold... K, so ignition too advanced... lets turn the dissy counter clock wise....

Alright... fire her up again... now heres the WIERD symptom...
I retard the timing by turning the dissy counter clock wise right...

BUT! the engine will turn like 3 turns... than the starter motor would disengage like as though the piston that the starter was pushing up suddenly got forced in the opposite direction without no back fire noise...... sometimes it would could 6 turns and do this,.. sometimes 2... this ignition happening against the direction of the piston travel is obviously very nasty for the motor, the pressure would be enormous. But wouldn't this rule out the possibility of timing belt timing being wrong? Cause its ignition based?

I thought, maybe i should re-advanced it again... got a backfire... retard again... i get this...

I have a timing light... but the gay Haynes manual requires a running engine to do the timing... and after the head has been totally dismantled... i wouldn't know where the original dissy suppose to sit on the head...

I saw the left over, very faded grime marks that appear to be where the dissy initially sat on the head (rotation position wise), but that was where i initially fired it up... before i adjusted cause of backfiring and over advanced timing...

How does one time an engine properly without it running? is there a base position for the dissy to be started with?

If i put the engine in diagnostics mode... does this help me at all?

Btw... its a 3sge distributor... 5sfe ecu. the original 5sfe distributor has one pick up crank position sensor.. the 3sge has 2, from my research on a toyota scientific publications manual, the pickup sensor G1 from the 3sge is in the same position as the 5sge G1... so i use that by wiring it up... and chop and seal off the G2 sensor...

I know the 5sfe ecu is not the most optimal way to run a 5sge, but it was working! (with no engine warning lights too :P) All 5sfe sensors have been adapted... including throttle position sensor, temperature sensors etc.
