.....he wants to swap it out. .....another 5S is out of the question.
Why is a 5S out of the question ???.....'twould be easiest/cheapest way to go. I seriously see no reason to swap in anything else, unless he wants to to 3SGTE (turbo, baby). How deep are your dad's pockets (how fat is his wallet ) ???

5S=not enough power. and me personally I dont think 1k for a 5S is cheap (maybe easiest but certainly better options IMO) we've got about a 2k spending cap for this project.

Your best option is going to be the 3SGTE ...... can make incredibly good power, was an available motor on said car (in the AllTrac, anyway......I believe motor mounts need changing, tranny needs changing, ECU, axles .....and it's a turbo, so ..... since you know of better options, go for 'em. Swapping ain't cheap. )
Go over to www.celicatech.com and ask around....those guys know what they're doing, and there's a LOT of 5th gen Celica owners on there ('90 to '93)
$2k spending cap won't get you a running 3sgte in your car.
Looks like you're getting another 5sfe, or POSSIBLY a 2nd gen 3sge... which is a rather worthless swap.
If you can do all your own fabrication, you may be able to get a 1mzfe in there.

like i said a 5s isnt really a option. what would you say is a price range to get a 3sgte running in the car?
If you're going to leave it stock... it's doable for $3k or under.
Keep in mind, at the VERY least, you're going to need:
Full engine set - ~$1500
Aftermarket clutch to go with stock tranny - $400
Either fmic setup or alltrac hood - ~$300-600
Wiring modifications, DIY or pay to have it done - ~$0-400.
And you can count on needing to service the 3sgte for SOMETHING once you get it... so budget at least another $500 on top.
It's DOABLE for cheap... it'll just take a long time and you'll be constantly searching for deals.
To do the swap RIGHT (at least what i consider to be RIGHT) you'll be spending considerably more, for the following reasons:
1) I don't like the gen2 motor. So a gen3 would be a better, more expensive choice.
2) I don't trust S-series trannies with 3sgtes. So that would necessitate an E153 tranny swap. (figure another $1000, PLUS clutch.)
3) Wiring is harder
4) Parts are harder to find and more expensive for teh gen3 motor.
I already have about $1500 into my gen3 swap... JUST in miscellaneous stuff, a tranny, and a TRD LSD.

Mounts don't need changing.
Tranny doesn't NEED changing.
If you don't change your tranny, axles don't need changing.
ECU should come with 3sgte clip.
And yes.... celicatech is your friend.

its going to be stock for the most part besides an exhaust. lets say 1500 for engine, harness, ecu, etc. i found a fmic kit for 220. clutch 400. the wiring we can do. i'd consider the E153 but i cant seem to find one for my es300 let alone anything else

Then the stock S53 tranny should be fine.
Keep in mind exhaust will eat up budget too...

The 2nd or 3rd gen 3S-GE would a be a good NA swap. It's from 160hp+ depending on year. The 3S-GTE is your best bet but if NA is what your looking for then the 3S-GE it is.

2nd gen isn't really much of an upgrade...
In my old stock 93 GT Coupe, i had a faster quarter mile time than the people on celicatech with the 2nd gen 3sge. It's not worth the money as far as i'm concerned.
The 3rd gen, is an entirely different animal, though.
