Right now ive set my goal(s) for 2k(to purchase motor, tranny, starter etc etc off ebay or another dealer) and a total of around 4-5k over a 2-3 year period.(for mic. parts an what not).
I know WHAT i need in the swap, but im wondering, how can i make it STREET LEGAL?? anyone know? i know it has something to do with some mr2 stuff.
So how do i do this swap, an keep my car street legal???

Get a USDM 3sgte from the same year or newer than your car.

Im looking into a gen2 or gen3(probably 2, but shooting for either)
So whats a USDM? and thanks for all the help Con, youve been real helpful with everything, glad i decided to go with this swap.
US Domestic Market. :P
It'll have all your emissions BS on it so it'll pass inspection in Cali.
We never got the Gen3 motor over here, so you'll have an interesting time getting that to pass inspection.

So if i did the gen2, will i be ok? even if its JDM?
JDM won't have emissions on it.
I live in a state where we don't have inspection, visual or otherwise.... so... i'm not sure what hoops you have to jump through.
JDM won't pass visual over there, though. I think to make it legit you'd have to retrofit all your emissions bs.

retrofit all my emissions?? lol im sorry but im lost right now. Im trying to understand. Im located in CA btw, so Smog over here is a pain. What does it mean to retrofit my emissions?

Another question for you Con.
With this 3S-GTE swap, how much work am i actually looking at???
I mean, i know it wont be easy or anything, but exactly how difficult is it to make it work, and work right?
Do i need to change my drive train from FWD to AWD? My teacher works for Toyota, and is a big toyota guy, and says the swap is just putting everything in, piece by piece, taking the time and doing it right, is that correct?
Also, whats the issues with the wiring harness?
I just want a good look at what im getting into before i start the swap, im going to do it, because ive set my mind on it now, and now i cant not do it lol, plus i want to build this car.

Your car will not pass the visual test without having EGR, for one. Basically... JDM motors do not have the emissions equipment to pass smog on them. You swap it in your car, it MAY pass the sniffer if it's running correctly, but it won't pass the visual test, unless you source and put all the USDM emissions bs on it.

Basically its either that or just drive it illegally.

It's no Honda swap... But it's not bad.
1) No, you're not switching to AWD. You can't. I mean... you COULD, but if you have to ask if you can or not, then YOU can't. :p
2) Your teacher is mostly correct, yes.
3) Wiring harness issues? Just have to repin a connector or two, and extend the harness if you get a JDM engine. If you're worried about it, Dr Tweak will do it for you for like... $400 i think?
It's doable for a first time swapper. If you have basic mechanical knowledge you should be fine. Just don't expect to do it in an afternoon.

Im going look into it all.
Thanks Con you've been a big help
Or pay a hole in the wall shop to "pass" you.

A JDM motor won't pass smog in California. First thing is that it doesn't have the EGR equiment nor is it even possiable to swap it over to a USDM (United States Domestic Market) motor. The JDM heads does not have the EGR ports nor does the intake manifold. The wiring is not setup for it along with the ECU. You'll need need a USDM motor or a USDM 3S-GTE head, intake manifold, and ECU. THe ecu can either be a celica all-trac or mr2 turbo, makes no difference. You might pass the sniffer with a JDM if the swap is done clean and everything runs really good, but when visuals and EGR testing you'll fail. If you happen to walk into a 4 wheel drive compatible smog station then you'll fail on all smog tests. As for the swap it self, it isn't that hard and it's almost a drop in as the celica was built for the 3S-GTE. Your transmission will fit but might not last to long due to the turq.
No comments about Dr. Tweak not the best guy to go to with harness paid 575 for my harness to be done sent it back to me month later. And the harness was missing plugs and was to short.

That sounds awfully like a comment about Dr. Tweak to me....
Did you send him two unmolested, uncut, nothing missing harnesses?
That price says to me that you didn't.
