Gen5 spark plug shot out of the head!!!

ok today im driveing down the highway and all of a sudden i hear a moast ungodly noise i think its a rod bearing (the 5sfe has a rod knock) so i pull oer pop the hood expecting to see oil smoke littel bits of metal NO... i see the spark plug wire (the hard plastic nylon part) blown to littel bits and the spark plug STILL CONECTED to the wire hanging from the intake manafold (i did not know this could happen?) so i pulled the spark plug off hung the wire in a non arcking spot shut the hood and drove back home (the 5sfe dosent make a bad 3 cylinder) the car sounded somthing between a lawn mower and a drag car going down the highway hunting for gas at every stop

then i took my fathers truck to get plugs and wires came back and the dam threads were blown out all the way down the spark plug just went in no catch on anything and when i pulled it out littel bits of thread came out with it
what can i do to fix this cheap? i really dont care for the 5sfe this is my third (probly with high miles they only came with a 30 day warnte) i just want to get mobile again in my opinion the 5sfe is an underbuild P.O.S. i am looking to put a nicely rebuilt (not 5sfe) in my car somthing not with tons of power but with solid 200000 mile components...any suggestions there are alot of companies out there

You're just having bad luck... the 5sfe is a ridiculously OVERBUILT motor. Pretty much as reliable as toyotas get.

Unless you want to frankenstein a 22r or 3tc in that car....

If you want "tons of power" and reliability, swap to a newer v6.

Gen5 then there is no hope

the thing is ive blown 2 5sfe's the first one had an oil pump failure followed by one of the conecting rods snaping like a tooth pick then hammering the piston through the block the second one (the 800$ replacement) that came with a 30 day warntee shot a rod through the oil pan and cracked the block THANKFULY within the 30 day warntee both theise engines were high mialeage yes but i babied them i mean its one thing to let it go but i put oh idk 300$ worth of replacement parts just so it would run smooth not leak now this current engine from the getgo had a rod knock so i tried LUCASOIL ADDITIVE and the shit has really had a good efect on it
can you fit a 22re in a 91 celica?

You're basing your experiences with 5sfes off of high mileage abused motors that you've swapped into your celica... roight.

Honestly? Here's what i suggest... it'll be the cheapest way for guaranteed reliability.

Go to the junkyard. Pull a 5sfe block and head. Tear it down, rebuild them. Put them back in your car. I guarantee that if the rest of your car is in good shape, electronics, etc.... this will be dead nuts reliable.

I beat the PISS out of my old 5sfe in my last celica... sold it with 218k miles, and it's still going strong. If you know the history, know that the upkeep has been done, it'll run forever.

22re in your celica? Sure... it can be done. Has anyone done it? Doubtful. I don't know of any FWD trannys that can be mounted to it, either. I was just naming motors that could possibly considered more reliable than a 5sfe.

Gen5 RIGHT i agree

well the first one had...80000 on it idk what the second one had i imagine it was well over 100000 after it was instaled and fresh oil put in i checked it a day later and the oil was brown with kindov a coperish glint to it this third one i used the lucas oil additave every oil change i subtract one quart of oil for the quart of additive and so far ive gotten 30000 out of it (there is an upper end noise) i planned on doing a complete rebuild then as i research everone does the 3sgte upgrade (i suppose its a littel more beefy?) i mean the support fore the 5sfe is bare if any heres somthing really awsum i live about 2 miles from a strictly toyota junkyard advanced forign auto (ill giv you his number)
its just really confuseing who to buy a 3sgte from what parts to buy and from whom i want long block reliability but i know its going to be a pain in the ass to buy an engin have it rebuilt reassembled and put in i dont even know how long it wil take
i do love this car

Then just rebuild the 5sfe. And you're fine.

Sounds like you wouldn't be too excited about the 3sgte, and to be honest, if you want reliability, you don't want a 3sgte in your celica anyways. For that matter, swapping ANYTHING will be less reliable than a rebuilt 5sfe.

And no... there's not much aftermarket out there. BUt it's out there. You just won't hear about most of it on this forum. If you're serious about doing stuff to the 5sfe, check out celicatech, or read some of the recent power threads here, i've posted a decent starting list.

Ditto that .... have mentioned the site before, but didn't know if this place frowns on recommending other sites or not. Celicatech has a huge number of members , a good many of them still running the good ol' reliable 5S *many 5th gen'ers there, although it is an all inclusive Celi site !!!

Eh... i don't really care if this place frowns on it or not. There's a sad lack of technical info on this site. It's fine for general questions, but for technical info, write-ups, etc... there's no replacement.
