Swapping a 3sgte or sr20det in my 1973 celica

I know I will get flamed if I swap an sr20det into my 1973 toyota celica st, but I am unfamiliar with the 3sgte and would love to swap that in instead. I really need to know how much power at the wheels the stock 3sgte bottom end and head can take without building it yet. I know the sr20det has run in the 400+whp range on stock bottom end. My goal is 350-400 rwhp right now, later on I can build it.

350-400whp is doable on a healthy stock 3sgte. It's all in the tuning. Stock 3sgte head is better than SR20DET, you'll get to that power range with less boost i would imagine.

Well that is a good thing. I really would rather stick a Toyota specific engine in my celica instead of going the nissan route. Is there a good aftermarket for the 3s-gte or is it really limited to a certain manufacturer? I know there are loads of aftermarket goodies out for the nissan motor but again I would much rather have a yota motor.

It's not HUGE aftermarket, but it's out there and very available. There are a few good shops that specialize and carry a lot of stuff for the motor. You won't have a problem finding the parts necessary for your power goal.

ATS Racing
Chico Raceworks
MCS Buggies
Speed Source

You can find stuff at 935motorsports, 185performance, etc... Check around MR2oc and Celicatech and you'll find links and vendors all over the place.

Well I don't really need a huge aftermarket just one that can provide me with quality parts that wont kill my wallet everytime I need to replace something. I have decided to go with the 3s-gte, what modifications will I need to get to my 400rwhp goal?

Turbo kit, injectors, good intercooler, exhaust, cams, probably want to modify the intake manifold plenum (ATS does this service for reasonable money) and a standalone.

Then obviously a nice strong clutch.

See my goal is to have my 1950lb celica run mid to high 10 second 1/4 miles. I will probably be getting the megasquirt ecu.

How's about you provide some hard proof and figures as to why the SR20DET is a better engine than a 3sgte?

You told us nothing.

Well I have been talking to a lot of my drag buddies that race toyota's the same as mine really, just they all use the 2jzgte. The 3sgte is what I will be using, also the 3sgte is a Toyota motor and not Nissan, so I will feel better about it anyway. The 3sgte is essentially a 2jz with 2 cylinders cut off, and the torque stock is square with the horsepower so don't forsee a problem producing enough torque to move my 1950 lb car.

You are going to want a bellhousing from an Aussie spec 1982-1985 ST141/142 Corona (RWD with a 1S/2S engine).
I think the Japanese spec 2.0 L Altezza also uses a 3S engine with RWD but I'd have to double check that.

It does... it's a 3sge in RWD config. The IS200 also came with a BEAMS 3sge option in RWD.

Well I am kinda diciding against the 3sgte now because it will require more modifying not only to the cross member which I can deal with, but the intake manifold sits too high and the hood will have trouble closing. So I don't know maybe a 2jz or the shorter 1jzgte may be going in the car.

How much more clearance do you need to clear the 3sgte intake manifold? I'd call ATS and see what they can do for you, because for your power levels, it'd be a good idea to have them at least put their plenum on your manifold anyways. I bet they could trim it down enough to fit, at a VERY minimal decrease in performance, if any.

And it may also help to try to use a 1st gen manifold, since it's side feed. Trying to get a center feed manifold in there in a FR scenario might be a pretty trick anyways.

Well I don't know yet. I am still thinking of 1jzgte or the 2jzgte which will fit with some fabrication and these two engines will more than be capable and will easily give me 500+ rwhp with just an upgraded turbo and some good tuning with the appropriate supporting mods. How is the after market for the 1jzgte? Everyone so far has been incredibly helpful and I thank you soo much for the effort and information to help a fellow yota lover out.
