'95 Celica driver side Drive axle replacement

Hello:

1st time poster here. I'm doing job as title suggests. This is my wife's car, an ST, no-ABS, AT. Inner driver is not flange type, and it has a grooved/spring snap ring retainer on inner driver shaft.

I got it apart, removed old shaft. Left inner driver in (a mistake I found out) when I went to buy remanned shaft. I have new shaft (CARQUEST).

A couple questions...
* inner driver, as I understand, should just pry out. I've given it a bit of muscle, but refuses to budge. Just double checking... prying out this spring-retained inner driver is the way to do it?
* manual makes reference to seal behind this thing in differential, but mentions only caution to not damage seal. Should this seal be replaced? What is procedure to do so?
* I removed 2 nuts & 1 bolt connecting lower control arm to ball joint in order to remove this thing. There is no mention in manual about whether these are 1 use nuts/bolts. I would sure think so, but... can anyone tell me if that's the case?
* Same w/axle nut on end of outer CV: no mention if it's one use. Since there's a retainer nut and cotta pin, I'm not so sure... but I'd like to be sure. Is that thing a one use nut?

Ok, any advice/help appreciated.

Thanks.

Most likely you already did the job but:

The snap ring on the inner driver can make the shaft a pain to remove! Try using a pry bar to pop it out.

Same with putting the new one back in. Place some grease on the snap ring location and orient the gap down, the grease will keep it from rotating. Then shove the shaft.into the diff!

Make sure the shaft is started correctly in the diff/carrier hole before you shove as you don't want to damage the diff housing seal.

If the seal was not leaking it does not need replacing. But again you can damage it during shaft installation. Make sure the shaft is started into the diff correctly before ramming it into place.

Have never replaced nuts, bolt, etc unless damaged.

Typically Toyota states to replace the large axle nut but have never done this either. If the new axle came with a new nut just use the new one. Make sure you use new cotter keys!

what ever you do dont beat the hell out of it where the big nut goes with a BFH, you might not have the splines started right, crooked, and will mushroom the end so the nut wont thread on, simply do as stated above and take your time and use the play in the inner joint and the axles weight to simply push and pull on it and it will pop in, get a buddy to hold the inner joint straight

1 1/2" crow bar? Do you mean 1 1/2'?

Actually, using two pry bars, one on each side of the inner joint against the trans case, will work better. Use just one pry bar some times works, but most often it just binds up in the diff. What you are trying to do is cause the snap ring to compress evenly on the diff side gear so it will slip out.

N.E.O.
