93 Celica Speedometer

Well, my spedometer stopped working after I had to slam on my brakes to prevent from hitting a dog.... Does anyone have any trouble shooting steps I can use so that I'm not just shooting in the dark buying a 200$ speed sensor?

It's gear driven, not speed sensor driven, so you'd REALLY be wasting your money.

And for the 5th time in the last month, here's how to check... sigh.

There's a cable that goes from your transmission through your firewall to your guage cluster. It's in two parts, one that goes from the tranny up to about.... 8" from your firewall, where it screws into the part that goes through your firewall to your cluster.

1) Check to make sure the cable is tightened down and secure in the tranny. It will only go in a certain way, and if you dislodged it due to vibration or anything else, you'll have to screw it back in. And it's a bitch. Enjoy. Should take about 10-20 minutes of swearing and cramping your arm, it's a really bad angle.

2) If the cable is OUT, make sure that the prong hasn't broken off the bottom of it... if it HAS, go get another bottom section from the junkyard for like... $5. Any manual 5th gen will have the correct part, whether it's ST, GT, or GTS.

3) If the bottom part is correctly inserted and tight, check the connection to the upper cable. Same deal, should be tight and snug. If it IS:

4) Check to see if the cable is properly inserted into your guage cluster. This sucks, i'm not going to tell you how to take the cluster out to check, it's a bunch of screws around the cluster, and then you have to maneuver it out somehow.

Napa sells parts... they aren't certified to diagnose cars.

We DO have speed sensors.... but if i said that i've even heard of more than one going out in the last 5 years i've been around the community... i'd be lying.
