USA Cooling System

93 celica 2.2 Anyways so the temp never rises above normal on the gauge but when I go fast like 50+ the gauge slowly drops until its on the first line until I stop then it climbs back to normal. I don't get it.... Anytime it's been a thermostat on any of my other cars it has gotten hot when I was at idle... Anyone else have any input because I really dont want to start tearing things apart without being sure... I know the thermo is only 20 bucks but seriously.

At 50+ the increased airflow through the radiator provide excess cooling ability. The T-stat should close a little to keep the coolant temp up.

Unless a problem with the other areas of the cooling system the T-stat should open and close to keep the coolant temp between a narrow range.

Sounds like his thermostat is stuck permanently open (they usually fail by sticking permanently closed).

Put it in a pot of water with a thermometer and see if it opens well before the boiling point.
