'86 Celica GT, 2S engine, oxygen sensor

Hello.

I have an '86 GT and I want to test/replace the oxygen sensor. Unfortunately, I don't know where it is!

I have the Chilton's Manual for this model and year, but it has no diagram/picture to show me where it is.

I know it should be somewhere before the catalytic converter, but I really need a more specific idea.

Does anyone have, or can point me to, a picture? Failing that, can anyone give a detailed description? Please note, I'm not a car guy, so telling me it's right next to the felgercarb conflator, or similar, is not gonna be helpful.

All help will be deeply appreciated.

Um, does anyone have any questions? Is there anything unclear or confusing?

It is usually on the exhaust manifold like this one: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d2.../4DSC05155.jpg.

Thanks!

Just a couple of questions: Is that picture taken from above or below? And, which direction is the front of the car?

Yes, I'm THAT bad with cars.

That particular picture is not a Corolla, however, that would be very close to how it looks like on you car, standing at the front of the car looking inside the engine compartment. You can also post a picture of your engine compartment so someone can point it out to you, specifically the exhaust manifold side of the engine compartment.

Like NEO says, follow the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipes back.
Not a 2SE motor, but you get the idea.

Sorry I haven't replied before; it's been busy.

Anyway, I'm afraid neither of those pictures is any help. Rick, I guess the 3s is WAY different from the 2S; looks to me like that diagram "says" the exhaust manifold is on the radiator side of the engine. N.E.O., your picture seems to be the same way WRT where the exhaust manifold is.

My understanding is that the exhaust manifold turns a kind of whitish or light beige color, due to stuff burning/scorching on it due to the heat. That shows on your picture, N.E.O. There's nothing that color in my engine compartment that I can find.

Here are a couple of pictures of my car's engine compartment. I hope someone can spot the exhaust manifold (or even the oxygen sensor) from one of these pictures.

First, from the front:

Next, from the passenger's side of the engine compartment:

Judging by the pictures i'd have to guess the exhaust manifold was under the intake manifold (like on the 4AC). i'd like some better pictures of the distributor side of the engine.

Unfortunately, a picture of the oxygen sensor for your engine is not available. The exhaust manifold for the 2SE engine is on the back side of the engine. The picture that was shown is just to give you some ideas on how the sensor looks like, you probably have to look underneath the vehicle to locate the part that you are looking for.

Um, that would be the front, as shown in the first picture. The distributor is just to the left of the center of the picture. It's the round shiny black thing with two cables leading off each side.

IOW, lie on my back and wriggle in the mud. No thanks.

I'll just have to hope everyone who gives it a test drive doesn't take it out too long. After all, it's fine when the engine's cold or cool; it's only when it warms up that it stalls & dies.

Is the stalling and dying problem that you are trying to fix with checking the O2 sensor?

Maybe you should check the throttle body first to make sure that it is not dirty with deposit around the throttle plate. Also check the auxiliary air valve and the idle bypass.

Let's see...
Auxiliary air valve? Only on 4A-FE engine.
"Idle bypass"? Nothing by that name I can find. How about "idle speed control (ISC) valve"? Located on the throttle body.
Throttle body & throttle plate? Well, I can find "throttle body". Instructions for removing:
"1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal..." Fine, I can do that. "...and drain the cooling system." Say WHAT?!?!

Fuggedaboudid. Life's too short.

Well, thanks anyway, but I'll let the next owner worry about it.
