Gen5 supercharged v6 in 5th gen

hi all been on here for a while and i finally got around to posting a thread based on my supercharged v6 build in my 5th gen celica...................

ok to start with i bought the celica with the intention of putting a 3sgte engine in.....but over time i started to look into other areas of engines that would fit.......with no intention of putting one in.....but the more i looked into it the better a v6 sounded......... so naturally this ended up being what i wanted to do........

with not many of these conversions completed i had to rely alot on the mr2 swaps involving both 1mz and 3vz v6's....

these were awesome for info, but still not tottaly reliable as they have different running gear and it is alot easier to put one of these motors into an mr2 due simply to similar gearboxes and cv's.......

so my research continued........

i found a few 6th gen celicas and 1 5th gen in america that had done this conversion and i struck up a conversation with the lad that built it......his info and experience was a god send as he could give me a heads up on anything to look out for..........having said that, i am farily mechanicly minded and most of what he had done i had figured out before i got to speak to him....but for other areas that i had missed or neglected his info was awesome

so here we go........i had decided to go ahead and commit myself to this swap.....now on with finding either a donor car or a half (front) cut.......

this process took for-ever as all i could seem to find was automatic gearbox cars....and with an average price of $1,800 au this was definately a way cheaper option at around half the price of a 3sgte.....

so now it sounds even better....cheaper than a 3sgte with similar power.....

so i finally found a half cut........ a manual 1996 3vz-fe camry for $550

so these are pics of celica before i started messin with it.........

So with the halfcut bought it was time for more research and info gathering.......and stripping of the halfcut and prep it for its new home.....
also at this point i was talked into supercharging by my mates helping me with the conversion... so i perchased a SC14 supercharger to provide the boost.......

soon it was time to pull the old tired 5sfe out and clean the engine bay up and prepare it for it's new heart......

so with all the oil and gunk removed from the engine bay it was time to turn my attention to the v6.....

starting with the mounts for the SC14 charger and painting little bits.and pieces......

so with charger mounted and painting done it was time to turn my attention to the cv's, gearbox and mounts........take em off the 5sfe and put em on the 3vzfe........

i had originally planned to use the camry box which is the reason that i spent so long looking for a manual one.....and as the mr2 guys had said that all mounts bolt up and drive shaft with little mods fit as well......so this is what i had in mind........

however only 1 of the 5sfe mounts bolted to the 3vzfe gearbox (e153) the others would need modifing....which is something that i didn't really want to do...... so i decided to bolt up the 5sfe gearbox to the 3vzfe....as i had been informed that they bolt together......... so off with the gearbox's.....

3vzfe manual gearbox (E153)

5sfe manual gearbox (E53)
pic error
notice the oil.......rear crank seal was buggered......

so now i had to think about what to do with the clutch now that i was changing gearbox's......so out came the measuring tape and this is what i came up with.........

camry flywheel......celica exedy heavy duty friction plate......camry pressure plate......this works perfectly so far am yet to drive to test this setup but i have been assured that it will be solid.........

so now with gearbox sorted.... and bolt pattern checked, clutch done, it was time to put it back on the 3vzfe and make a new inspection plate....as neither the 5sfe or 3vzfe matched..........

i also had to make a new mounting bracket for the 5sfe cv bearing carrier (centre shaft)as the bolt holes didnt match with the 3vzfe block so this is what we came up with......

time to put the v6 in the celica.......

3vzfe with 5sfe gearbox bolted up..........

and now in its new home

Oh and a new front bar as well....pics of new hood and bumper to come

so with 3 of the 4 mounts bolted up i now had to make 1 new mount...timing cover side engine mount........this is what i came up with........

so currently this is where i am up to......

still to do......
New Radiator
re-design supercharger mounts as it doesn't quite fit.....or modify radiator mounts to allow charger fitment.......
re-connect all hoses and piping
mount intercooler
re-condition and re install cv's
upgrade with slotted brake rotors
and upgrade suspension.......

body mods still to come....
custom wide bodykit
custom sideskirts
custom rear bar
re-design rear wing
paint (new colour)

i hope you have enjoyed reading and maybe even inspired you to do the same conversion......who knows.....this could become a very popular conversion..........

grant

hey grant,

any updates on this? i'd like some better pics of your engine mount if possible. we lined up a 3VZ for my bro's 90 wagon so that + my MR2 turbo trans might make it's way in if i can figure out the mounts.

thanks, Jd

cool. well i got to thinking. i have a MR2 box. it's supposed to be same as V6 camry. i am wondering if the mounts from the celica will bolt up to the trans now. i know you said that the V6 bolted to the celica trans. so i guess i'm doing it in a round about way.

yeah man....... all i needed to get the camry box bolted up is mr2 mounts.......so you shouldn't have any dramas..........but this has not been confirmed......so could be a hassle but i doubt it.............

and yes the turbo mr2 and the camry V6 share the same gearbox........
