Gen5 failed emission/catalytic con.

Recently just bought my 3rd Celica, it's a '91 Celica GT-S, I just took it to inspection and failed because of high emission. I was told I could buy fuel injection cleaner and would be able to pass inspection but I failed again

I took my car to a mechanic, I was told I needed to buy a catalytic converter, I did some browsing around and I kept noticing that my catalytic converter is connected to my headers and would have to buy both in order to get it replaced, is this true ?

First NO2 level was 1502
Second NO2 level after the fuel injector cleaner was 1194
And standard level should be lower than 1134
Yeah I know, second time I almost passed

Will appreciate any replies or tips ! Thank you !

I don't think you need to buy both. I believe the CAT is bolted on to the headers not a one piece.

For your 5SFE engine, you can unbolt the cat from the exhaust manifold. It's not all one piece.

Go out.... beat the CRAP out of your car for about 30 minutes, then go get it tested. You're close enough that it seems silly to buy a new cat for what.... 60 points?

I had the same readings. My mechanic, if I recall correctly, vacuumed the carbon out, cost me $90. Cut the readings in half. My dad, a retired mechanic, told me to "beat the crap of it".

My 91gt had the same problem. I took it to a muffler shop and he removed both cats, he "gutted" one and put it back on and replaced the other. All was well and it passed smog.
