Gen5 91 GT-S engine prob at 4k RPM

I just bought this car two days ago and made the usual list of things to buy and change right away. I changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor cause they were way past their prime. Now when the car gets above 4k RPM's in any gear the check engine light comes and surges. When I push in the clutch and let the RPM's drop to 2k the light goes out. I know I gapped the plugs right according to the manual and I put the cap and rotor back on in the right places too cause I made idiot marks. Any Ideas as to what it could be?

You possibly messed up the timing and the timing problem is amplified at higher rpms. The thing that the distributor cap and rotor connect to is the distrubutor. There is an adjustment bolt on the left side of the distributor. If the distributor was loose while you changed the cap and rotor and it moved, then the timing will be off.

To adjust the timing you really need a timing gun, but you have a good chance of getting it right just by listening to the engine while adjusting it. Loosen the bolt and adjust the distributor up to advance the timing and down to retard it. You need to connect terminals TE1 and E1 in the diagnostic connector, then start engine and adjust. read the manual ignition section page ig-25 if you have any problems.

Lightbulb

I looked in the book under the trouble shooting section and it turned out to be a compination of things. I looked at the fuel filter and it turned out to be the original one from 1991. So aI changed that out and that solved the fuel issue, which was causing the random surges cause it was telling the ISC Valve to give cut off all air due to not enough fuel. Then I double checked the all my connectors and reaad out all my switch's aand it turns out my water temp switch wasn't making good contact and when I fixed that I noticed that the Cold Start Injector Switch is cracked and I need to replace it next. The cars good again, it is just rough to start cause of the switch being broken. I am waiting for the new switch to come in.

As for the timing, I will adjust it after I replace the CSI Swtch. I have the repair manual from Haynes and the timing info was in Chapter 5, PG. 6. Thanks for the help PittsburghCeli!!!!

I have the haynes manual also, but I prefer to use the celica factory service manual link in my signature.

Glad you got it figured out.
