1976 20r no start, no fuel

here's the problem. i drove my 76 20r celica into the driveway and took the carb to replace it with a used 32/36 weber. (that took a couple of months). it now won't start.

i know it gets spark. it still starts when i spray starter fluid. i haven't tested the fuel cut-off solenoid since i don't know how with the one wire. i don't hear the fuel pump when i try to start it. i tested the fuel pump out of the car and it works but can't get the same results when powering it in the tank. i have a chilton but it just says test and replace if bad. it's getting pretty late and i'm confused on what to do next.

anyone know the problem or can suggest the next thing for me to do? thanks

Sounds like the pump is getting power.

The oil pressure sensor is used as a ground and the +ve wire to the coil is used as power.
Both of these feed a relay, which then feeds the pump.
The idea is that a normally running engine has good oil pressure, so the oil pressure sensor will be at near ground.
After an accident the engine will stop running, oil pressure goes down, the sensor effectively disconnects ground from the relay and the pump stops pumping fuel all over the road if the accident split the fuel line.

During cranking, a wire goes from the switch START position to the relay to override the relay (which is not yet working due to lack of oil pressure).

I suspect the override wire for starting is not connected.

The Haynes manual has a good wiring diagram at the back for the '77 which matches your '76 for the fuel pump.

ask the pickup boys over on the Toyota pickup section. the 84-88 and earlier can help you out pretty well.
