saturday had a rod starting to knock. I let it sit for the night at a buddies house. sunday morning i was going to start to home and the knocks got even worse. from first knock to detonation was a total of 7 miles. my 92 5sfe had 225k miles on it. the weird thing is is that friday night i got 180ish miles on a quarter tank of gas. any idea what caused the quick fail?
im not driving it. its sitting in alabama. i see what you mean though. im looking for engine's now. yeah 88 supra turbo isn't running. my celica motor blew not the supra's. the supra needs a fuel pump and filter, and a few other things. off topic i was working today and ran across another supra, dont know if its a turbo or not. going to check it out later this week.

plus i appreciate the praise man but the turbo has 145k on it. still a good bit without blow a head gasket but 80k short.
I've seen several 5th gen Celicas with blown engines in the last couple of years, couldn't ever figure out why...then my crank seal let go last week...good thing I pay such close attention under the hood. I caught it the same day, before it could empty the crankcase and seize. Did you lose any oil the day/night before it started knocking?

Honda my A$$, you just can't kill a Yota...
Rod bearing probably let go. That seems to be the main cause of death for these motors.

It is quite a beastly little motor though. Mine decided to go on a nice remote stretch of highway near the Bonneville salt flats. Threw a rod, blew the head gasket, blocked the coolant and blew open the top of the radiator near Nevada. Right at 199,000k. With JB-Weld and gasket sealant on the radiator top, I drove that 3 cylinder bitch all the way to Salt Lake City. Lived for another 2 days so I could prep the engine and get her swapped. The 5SFE; a real beast that refuses to die.

Agreed.
I sprayed my last one right up to the point i sold it at 220k miles. All original gaskets, motor never opened for any reason. Took a 75shot like a champ. Still running today with 238k miles on it.
There's a guy on Celicatech that had over 350k miles on his, and he ran it on the Tail of the Dragon and it was fine, and strong.

yeah alittle oil and i put more in it. but i think it is either the seal or the bearing. and that might have caused massive oil loss because all of a sudden all 3 other rods started to go. i only drove it because i had to make it back to someones house

they are beasts. i found one for a later year camry that has coil packs. i was thinking about getting that one for it. anyone know any downsides to the 5sfe with coil packs? i pretty much refuse to get a 3sgte right now. i would rather just drop another 5sfe in it and luckily i didnt throw a rod through the block but hopefully the cylinders arent too badly damaged. i would like to turbo that block. hell i will need to tear it down anyways
It failed so you could have an excuse to swap in a 3SGTE...
haha could be. i would like one but i plan on buying a celica with no motor and turning it into a gt4 conversion. as for my 92 gt, i first have to get it back to my house. im looking hard for a new engine for it. if you can help me out i would really appreciate it.

This is acceptable only if you go all the way all-trac with AWD... :P
