I've seen it done with on an '85 Corolla but it's a lot of work and custom engineering. Fairly easy? Hmm, I don't think I'd call it that, but I guess it depends on your skill level and work facilities.

First, the 3SGTE is transversely mounted whereas the 84 GTS is mounted longitudinally. So, you'll have to reposition motor mounts. Probably better to go Gen 2 GTE, more: parts, mods and potential.

Rick,
I think you got confused between teh 1G-GTE (a straight 6 longitudinal engine) and the 3S-GTE (a straight 4 which was always transverse in turbo form but available in both mounting positions in non turbo form).

The 1G-GTE fits the RA65 engine bay without major surgery but only if you put the radiator in front of the radiator support panel.
A friend did this to his '77 Celica.
The '84 engine bay is ever so slightly bigger, so it is a viable swap.

The transmission is the same as your GTS transmission but you will need the bellhousing from any 1G engine.
If you have trouble finding one then a bellhousing for a 2T or 3T engine will also fit but the 2T/3T manual gearbox is too weak, so a 3T auto from a Corolla will work.
The 2T/3T starter is on the other side but this shouldn't bother you.

You will also need some custom engine mounts made.
My friend used MS130 engine mounts on his '77 Celica but this will probably not work for you.

Having said all that, why bother?
A Supra with the 5M-GE engine looks almost the same, will put out about the same HP as the 1G-GTE (160HP) and is almost trivial to upgrade to a turbo 7M-GTE.
We only do these things to the earlier Celica because there is no equivalent Supra model.

A better option is the LEXUS 1UZ V8.
260HP, same weight and fits the '84 GTS engine bay.
Downside is it's auto only unless you want to buy an expensive aftermarket adapter.

If you want to overhaul and rebuild a 7MGTE, you might want to give the Cincinnati UPull and Pay. Saw one in a Supra there the other day...

The 1600cc 4A-GE doesn't have much more HP than a mildly worked 22R-E.

Options are:
1. put a 20R head on your 22R-E, add decent exhaust and decent cam.
2. get a turbo 22R-TE, replace turbo, cam, computer and exhaust (factory items are designed for low end torque, not high end power).
3. 1UZ, 260HP, expensive to convert to manual but still plenty of power as an auto
4. 3S-GTE, needs Caldina or ST141 Corona bellhousing, dizzy hits firewall (replace with crank angle sensor)
5. 1MZ-FE or 1VZ-FE, no RWD transmissions

Putting in a straight 6 engine like an M series engine or a JZ series engine makes more sense in a Supra.
The engine bay is too small to make an easy swap.
