with my 92' celica I never go into 2nd if I am going above 40mph. any obove that the gears won't go In nicely and would grind if I forced it in. at 38 it goes in flaulessly. I think your shifting ring is bent. That is caused by cramming style shifting.

Up until 92 Toyota used weaker syncro's that wear out easily if you like to slam gears. The way syncro's work is that they need time between shifts to spin up and match speed. This is why I don't run a short shifter and bang gears on a daily basis, although my tranny could use a rebuild. Anyway, there are two things you can do, the first is to switch to a synthetic tranny fluid, it WILL help, but how much depends on the condition of your tranny. GM Syncromesh is regarded as some of the best shit to use. It is a little pricey at the dealer though, and I've heard that Penzoil synthetic and Syncromesh are the same thing, do a search with Penzoil and Syncromesh, you'll find the answer. The other would be a rebuild.

To change out the syncro's, you gotta tear apart the tranny. It makes sense to inspect and replace anything else thats broken along the way, which is a rebuild. The syncro's are cheap, like $50 or so. Try the fluid first.
