1990 Celica GTS 5S-FE Throttle Problem

Just recently the RPM's started sticking when I push the clutch in, they stay at about 2100 for about 5 or 6 seconds and then drop to only 1800. I checked the throttle linkage, the pedal and the throttle plate to see if they were hanging up and they are not. All the vacuum lines are fine also. I wonder if the throttle position sensor would cause this if it were going bad. Any suggestions?

This problem is progressively worse now. I used the car today and the RPM's are sticking at 2200 for about 10 seconds and only dropping down to 1900 at the lowest. Any ideas?

I was low on coolant and had to fill it up and reset the ECU by leaving the battery unplugged for about 15 minutes. Then it quit idling and sticking at well above the normal. Worth a check, otherwise its a sensor failure.

I'm assuming you've cleaned-out your throttle body at some point? It sounds like an unlikely cause, but on my V6 Camry it was so gunked-up from oil vapour dumping in from the valve cover that it was causing the throttle valve to stick open.

No intention to insult your intelligence here, just an idea...

One other idea, now that I think about it: could your water temp sensor be buggered-up? It would cause a high-idle, if the computer thinks the engine is stone cold...though probably not quite that high.

Cleaning out the throttle housing was one of the first things I did although initially it was very clean when I looked at it.

Right before this started happening I could hear the radiator fan running after I would shut down the engine but still had the key in the on position. It won't do this when the engine is cold in the morning and I turn the key on but it runs for a period of time each time the engine has been run and then shut down when I turn the key back on. With what you suggested it sounds like it could be the water temperature sensor. I will check it out.

remember your fan water temperature sensor and your ecu's one are different! On the same location though. (water outlet)

Well it's not the water temperature sensor. The new one made no difference. The sensor to the right of this one on the water outlet has a single brass or bronze tab. Would that be the sender/sensor for the water temperature gauge or ECU ?
