1.6l 4afe swap

Need Some suggestions on an engine upgrade or swap to go in my son's 1991 st. It has a 1.6l 4afe and I don't want to spend any more money than I have to. Would like to use the same transmission (5spd) if I do a swap. What about it?

1500 plus labour? A 4AGZE would give you around around 130 -160 HP stock, depending on which year you get. But the motor alone would probably be around that price. A Redtop 4AGE would be 130 but no supercharger and its not as stout, cheaper though. In either case you could use that tranny, different harness and ecu though. A less expensive and less exciting swap would be a 7AFE, its basically the same motor as you have now, but 0.2L larger. Not sure about the ecu and harness on that one though.

Take that eingine to a machine shop and have the eingine cylinders bored out. and get oversized pistons and get bigger headers and cold air intake and rework the exhaust system and increase the piping to 2" instead of the stock 1.5" this might give you 65 more horse power. this will run you less than 2,000. On second thought.........put a turbo in it less than 500.00

65HP after bolt ons and a slight bump in displacement and compression is a little optimistic, so is a decent turbo setup for $500.

Brand: TSI
Desc: 88 & Up Toyota Corolla
(same motor)
Type: Superior Kit
Status: Ready to ship
Price: $1999.00

Specs:
For Engines: 4AFE (1.6L), 7AFE (1.8L) & Now the new 1ZZ-FE
Boost: 6 PSI
HP Gain: 30% Increase (safely on stock engine)
Turbo Efficiency: 300+ HP
Direct Bolt-On: Yes
Warranty: 5 Year on Cast, 1 Year Accessories.
http://www.turbo-kits.com
This would give you 133.9 HP

decreasing the weight of the engine may be a better rout: headers, flywheel
and such.Also a cold-air intake system
does well and rather inexpensive.

I have a 92 Celica STX with the 4AFE; I chose the turbo and other performance parts followed. You dont have to do it all at once.

yea right that will at most get you 15whp. Do a 4age swap. or a 4agze swap. the 4agze is rated at 170 hp from a levin gt-z and they do quite good with bolt on's. both engine swap are stright forward and will bolt right in. Or get a silvertop 20v 4age. rated at 160ps but tested by peps at 140ish ps. all these swap are stright forward but the only trouble you might run into is the electricals. But there are alot of web pages that have the info on it such as club4ag.com or http://soniccreation.com/jdm4agzewiring.htm. the silvertops can be found for 700 dollars just the motor, a front clip could run to 1500 dollars same with the 4agze front clip. the cheapest thing you could do is get a 4age redtop none tvis for around 500-700 dollars. scrap the ecu get a 4age ecu why? 130hp premuim gas needed 10.4:1 comp and 7800rpm redline(but could rev to 8000 rpm and not even be fazed). the wiring is pretty stright foward. you could run the same tranny but then what would be the use. get the c51 tranny as it is a short ratio tranny. the gze comes with the E50 tranny with is heavyer than a c51 but might come with LSD. Al these swap if done by yourself will not cost you much only the engine cost. good luck
