Won't start 93 celica 2.2

Hey Guys
New to the forum and also new to DIY work, basically no mechanical experience.
Anyways I have a 93 celica gt with the 2.2 liter
Came home after work, car driving excellent as usual.
Next morning get in the car to go to work and the car won't start
Just keeps cranking.
I turn the key to the on position ( just before it starts to crank ) and I do not hear the fuel pump.
But when I am cranking, and then stop I hear the fuel pump winding down or shutting off-- not sure if this is normal or not
So can anyone with the same vehicle or experience with this confirm that the fuel pump does not come on until you start cranking
Just trying to eliminate stuff
any other suggestions guys on what to look for with this particular year celica
thanks in advance

You sure you hearing the fuel pump and not the starter slowing down? Usually you can't hear the fuel pump. Its on the fuel tank outside the body and under the back seat.
After you crank the engine, pull a spark plug and see if you smell gas.
Check for spark while you have the plug out.
Is the battery low on voltage?

won't start

Pineapple
Thanks for the reply
I pulled the plug after cranking the engine
Yes I smell gas on the plug
I do believe the pump is working as when I jumpered the fuel pump I could hear it, though it was not too loud or my hearing is getting bad.
Anyways I had one of the plugs out and I reconnected it to the spark plug wire and left it on the block.
I had someone cranking the engine but I did not see any spark.
As this is one of my first forays into DIY mechanics I might be missing something or doing it wrong.
Can you confirm that this is the proper method for determining if there is spark
Would I definitely be able to see it at the end of the plug
thanks in advance

With plug connected to spark cable. Ground the body of the plug to engine block or any bare metal bolted on body. Try a few spots just to make sure. Crank the engine and you should see spark.
Follow this to get engine codes:
