I recently was given a 92 Celica ST and now I know why. The 3rd cylinder only has 40 lbs. of pressure and the spark plug is coated w/ oil. Was told that it would cost me roughly 1500-1800.00 to rebuilt it or I could find a used motor and swap it out. Problem is, I can't find a used motor anywhere locally. I contacted a dealership and was told that the 1.6L A-FE motor was also put in the corolla from about 92-98 and that it would swap out with the one I have. I have looked some stuff up and when cross referencing the Corolla's, it seems that a Geo Prism motor will swap with the Corolla's. I still can not locate a motor in my area at the moment...Is there a way I can find out EXACTLY what year models and what cars will swap out with mine...
ok, the st came with a 4afe engine. the corollas years 90-97 also have that engine. 88-89 have the 4af which is the carbed version which is a fair bit less powerful and would require some modification like fuel pump and such. The geo prizm is essentially the corolla so same years should fit. beware of the 7afe engine which is the 1.8, it would work but requires much more wiring. Also there is the 4age which came in the corolla gts' from 85ish-92 which is also a 1.6 but has the performance "G" head and would mount right up, but you would need to acquire the ecu and FULL wiring harness with sensors.
You should be able to find a 4afe, those things are dime a dozen, every junkyard I've been to, I've seen at least 5 of them.
Theres also the 2.2L 5sfe (from the US GT and GT-S) models and the 3sgte 2.0L turbo but would require much much more than a 4age swap let alone just another 4afe
awesome thanks for the info, thats exactly what I needed. I'm just fixing it up to give to my daughter for her 1st car and I want the least amount of drama possible, so i'll stick with the 4afe...believe it or not, we have called almost every single junk yard and they all claim that they do not have an engine that will work and the ones that we have found want like 1200.00 for a motor with 160K on it.
just about any A series engine will drop into the engine bay with minimal work, 4AFE, 7AFE, 4AGE, 4AGZE. however, wiring it all up to run is something else. talk to pheonix tuning to see what dr tweak things and he can make you the whole wiring harness if you need it.
you would need the 1st gen 4AFE i think, its slightly different from the 93-97 4AFE. slightly different heads, different intake manifold, different emissions systems as well. however, i'm not sure if you could simply swap long blocks and reuse your current intake and exhaust manifolds with a newer 4AFE engine. if that would work it would be ideal, the redesigned head gives a slight bump in torque and fuel economy and also a small reduction in emissions.
thats definitely a possibility as wwell. just you would have to check the head, make sure theres no issues there causing you to lose compression before ploping that on a new block
877-249-7990 is te number to the guys i got mine from. It was $535 shipped to my door with liftgate service. Its the 1.5 replacemnt but if you look at the specs they are neary the same motor. I pulled the pan, valve cover etc. Absolutley beautiful. (0 day start up warranty. 1200 is almost enough for a flippin 1j swap!
the 5afe? I didn't ven know they were available in the US....
Just try to find the exact engine you have, I dont know you have first or second gen, but check the wiki page for the toyota A series engine, it should have a picture of both first and second gen 4afe (disregard the 4age entries, they look different) This way you'll have the easiest drop in without any issues and direct plug in.
Yup, from all ive seen in the little time ive been tinkin wit a yoda(years with flippin Hondas)((and Nissans) its the best route. No real power loss as ive heard from others and i just got done with the swap. Main difference is a hair(i mean i jus a little) of bore and stroke. Heads interchange and every other part. No modifications neccesary you have all you need Except gaskets. Just swap the distributor, exhaust and intake manifolds. Optionaly you can change the water pump housing( 3 bolts and some gasket sealer). Overall the best option and at the fact you can get them with under 50k on them, Locally i found 4afe at $500 with core exchange and the best out of about 10 motors was 100k on the motor.
Yes, it has the 4AFE in it now, but the salvage yard was saying that they did not have a motor that would fit. I knew that there had to be other cars that had the same motor in it so I guess my question was whats cars and years of cars (Geo Prism, Corolla etc....) had the same motor that I could just drop in bolt up and go. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the 92-97 Corolla and Geo Prism have the motors i'm looking for. If I have to swap out the heads, exhaust etc..., then thats oaky.
If I was doing this for me just to have some sort of play toy, i'd be looking to drop one of the turbo motors in it, but its going to be my daughters 1st car. It needs some work and some TLC (Paint is oxidized bad and clear coat flaking off in a few places). It was given to me and NADA and KBB say its not worth much, so I don't want to drop alot of money on it when i could just buy one off of EBAY for 1500.00...
Thanks alot guys, I have to say that out of all the vehicles forums i've ever been on, this has been the most helpfull and fastest response I think i've ever gotten.

if its the 2nd gen 4afe then its 93-97 if its the first gen then its 90-92 corolla
the only problem with the 5afe, is some little parts like the gaskets could be a pain to get a hold of. parts for the 4afe are about the easiest thing to get your hands on, and inexpensive to boot.(I work at an autoparts store, parts availability is a big thing for me lol)
