Starter problem on a 86 GTS

This is like my 3rd starter on the car. I have Headers on it, and on the GTS the starter is at the bottom of the headers. I think that the heat from the headers is killing my starter, because after every race my car wont start and every time its my starter. Last one had a vire inside that brock from the solder. Did anyone with a GTS Celica have this problem?

Have you inspected to see what happened to each starter?
This is a link to a page on WAO showing an 88 Tercel starter and here is a link to A starter for an 86 celica, not a GTS. I have no picture available for the GTS starter. However you might look up this Tercel starter and the GTS starter and see if they are compatable. Notice the Tercel's motor cover is steel vs the Celica's aluminum. The steel covers are/were better starters and if possible you should source one that fits.

Make sure car is not running lean, because if so then it
will heat-soak the starter no matter what, check you PCV
hose, if it is leaking oily then you have a vacuum leak. Any
vaccuum leak will make car go lean.

Also you can hook up an external relay to throw more current and voltage to the starter. Go to celica.net under 4th gen celica message board under the Sticky there is a starter fix. This is what I ended up doing with mine. I had three starter too. It is not the starter. It is your car running hot. But the relay is a cure all. The car will start every time with this fix. 4 wires power, ground and the stater solenoid wire spliced. Check out the post on celica.net

celica electrical fix all

i myself have had problems with each celica starting i have ever had. which has been a few now, also with voltage drop when ever the windows are going down and up.
replace the ground to the motor and body with 0 guage, well i guess 4 guage will do but the 0 seems to work even better considering the fully modded D3 amps, direct runs of 0 from the alt. and starter seem to solve every electrical problem everytime.
oh yeah upgraded alt. and severely upgraded batterys also always seem to help.
i have been told from salesman at the mitslowbisi dealer that the 4 guage upgraded body and engine ground is a $150 performance upgrade on the packages it supposedly adds al least 10 hp. bs or not it does seem to make a difference. let me know about a header for a 86-88 gts i don't want to have another built again and be out of my car for a week again.
