1997 3s-ge engine in 1993 celica - running problems

hi guys, my name is adam and i'm new here.

i have a problem hopefully someone can help with - i have a 1993 5th gen celica gt-r 2.0 16v 3s-ge (gen2 motor) which i have replaced for a 1997 3s-ge (gen3 motor) but now the car runs really lumpy with no power... on tick over its fine but when i pull away and try to drive it it is really sluggish and actually sounds like a subaru impreza boxer engine!!

does anyone know whether the 1993 ecu will work with the 1997 motor or will i need the ecu from the newer engine?

also that little pipe that sucks air into the throttle body, the idle control valve i think, is sucking air in like crazy - i mean REALLY sucking air in with alot of force and i'm sure the old engine didnt suck as much as that!

could this be a vacuum issue as the engines seem to have slightly different vacuum systems, i think i'v matched them up correctly.

i have changed the plugs and leads and it hasn't made a difference.

has anyone done a gen2 3s-ge to a gen3 3s-ge swap successfully?

any ideas anyone??? please help!

thanks in advance
adam

Although I am much MORE familiar with the 3SGTE, it seems to me that you should be running the 1997 ECU unless you are using all of the 1993 harness, sensors, and ECU on the 1997 engine.
