What did you do before this happened?

Can you get the car into neutral or decouple the engine from the rest of the drivetrain? In other words, can you push the car around with the clutch pressed to the floor.

Could be a number of things causing this - could be a blown clutch disc, you have a bad slave cylinder or master clutch cylinder, clutch pedal is not adjusted correctly, bent clutch pushrod, bent or broken clutch foot, shifter bushings are toast - pushing the shifter into "no-man's land", broken or damage "ball" on end of shifter base - disconnected from control cables, or the transaxle is toast.

Worst case - if the transaxle is toast - cost will be depend on if you get a brand new transmission installed or a rebuilt/used one swapped in. Could be anything from $500 or so for a used, junkyard transaxle to well over $1700 for a new or reman transaxle + labor.

You won't know until you pull it open to see for yourself. I've seen the little springs (assuming this is a sprung disc) actually pop out and jam. This will cause the transaxle to grind and make an awful amount of noise. Sometimes it will jam into a gear until it gets stuck. Reverse gear is sort of a "natural" home for many transaxles.

When you heard the rattling noise when coasting - was the clutch pedal in or out, in and out of gear? Could be a compound problem, if it rattles when you are coasting in neutral (clutch pedal out) - could be something wrong with clutch or transaxle. If it only rattles when you push in the clutch pedal in - could be the release bearing (throw out bearing) going bad. If the grease got burned out of it - it would seize up on you.

If the gear grinds when downshifting, possible that gear's synchronizer is probably damaged and needs to be replaced (assuming that the clutch is OK). But it sounds more like all the gears grind or clash when you downshift - the clutch may be dragging or not fully releasing when the clutch pedal is depressed - eventually it will overheat the disc and turn it into a bird's nest, jamming up the transaxle.

Worse case - transaxle that is stuck in gear could be caused by damaged shift linkage, a broken shift control cable, or a broken gear inside. Hopefully, this is not the case.

Curious - what replacement clutch did you go with. What was changed - just the disc (I also hope the TO bearing too)? Resurfaced the pressure plate/flywheel or did you get a replacement pressure plate/flywheel too? Running a short shifter? Last time you changed out the transaxle gear oil? If you changed the oil, what did you use to fill it back up?
