95 Celica - No power or high rpms

Hello all,
I have a 95 Celica GT that just recently lost most of its power. it happened all of a sudden. i left work to go home and when i got down the street i relied that something was not right. the car will rev up to 4000 rpms then cut out for a second until it drops to around 3500 rpms, which it then revves back to 4000 and drops down again. this happens over and over. the car is a little sluggish in the lower rpms as well, and makes a slightly deeper sound then it ever did before. it idles fines. i thought it might just be the fuel filter so replaced that and it did nothing. any imput would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

yeah i suppose i'll do that next. so you think this sounds more like a timing issue rather than a fuel issue?

tough to say, but fuel problems usually don't happen all the sudden. anything is possible without being able to diagnose it.

OMG! So i took the car to a local shop today to see if they could tell me for sure what the problem is before i tore the timing belt off again, and they said that my fuel filter is leaking really bad and they wanted 90 bucks to fix it plus the 35 bucks just to say the filter is leaking. i told them that i just replaced it and they accused me of more than likely cross threading it or something, so i came over and picked it up right away. i drove it home and checked and double checked and triple checked, and they fuel filter is positivity not leaking one bit... sorry, i just needed to rant and vent.
