Help! I need to find a relay for the hazards/turning lights and can't find one anywhere. The mechanic said they quit making these parts. A conversion kit is way too pricey for me and won't match the car. Anyone know where I could find a relay?
Thanks so much for responding. I'm a neighbor chick actually doing this for my 71-year old neighbor, and he's been pretty upset that he can't get his car inspected. Hope you can help!
There are a bunch of numbers beside a weird logo. 81980-12030 followed by TOYOTA with 12 - 95 underneath it.
Underneath all of that looks like an 'ND' connected together with these numbers after: 006300-0471 12*8V 85c/m
Underneath that it says Turn Signal 23Wx 2+3 4W
Hazard Warning Max.23W 5Bulbs
Then it lists the Nippondenso Co.
I'm not sure what all you needed, but that's what's on the box. I can take a pic for you too if you need it. I'll check out the websites you recommended after getting some sleep. I work nights and just got home. Thanks again!
Went to both sites you recommended. The 1sttoyotaparts site doesn't have options before 1980. The toyodiy site doesn't show a Celica for 1977 whether I select North America, Japan, or Other. Thanks for helping. Maybe you can come up with something from your work. The mechanic here in Texas got nada.
My neighbor (Grumpy Old Bear) lived in Arizona for years, and we even tried contacting the owner of a huge junkyard out there. GOB used to get his parts from him all the time. Turns out the EPA put the guy out of business. We're just not having much luck getting this one little relay.
well looking through the inventories and crossing stuff over I didn't find anything. My only advice is to look under switches as well. sometimes things like that fall into those catagories... sorry wish I could have helped more....
81980-12030 is the correct part number.
81980-12020 is listed in my Japanese market parts catalogue but I'm not sure if it suits an American car.
Walk into a parts dealer and tell him "I want relay 81980-12030".
They are often too lazy to find the part number but if they are given the part number they can usually find an actual part.
GOB was told by the parts store that they do have a 1976 or a 1978 Celica GT relay switch for his hazards/turn signals. Just not one for a 1977. The 1978 seems to be a better match, but the prongs are set just a tad farther apart than for a 1977. Would that work?
By the way, GOB, his best friend, and I, all appreciate how much you've tried to help us. I don't know if you can answer the above question, but maybe one of your buddies or some other mechanic out there can?
well the 78 is a different generation but should be the same engine.
but honestly like stepho said, the 81980-12030 number is the correct number for the relay so if they can cross that number to anything specific, I'd say give which ever relay is closest a shot if it only slightly different like you said. how far off is the 76 relay?
He didn't even mention the '76 being a match, so I guess it wasn't even close? Not sure. He's been to four different parts stores with the actual part and number, and all say it's been discontinued and is no longer available anywhere. That's why we've had so much trouble.
Once again, thanks for your help. We finally located the part. Looks like Stepho's theory on laziness might have been correct. A Toyota dealership we contacted in Sherman, TX, said that in fact the part had not been discontinued. Four other parts places told us it had! It's now on order and will be arriving next week.
Rob, I have just one more question from Grumpy Old Bear, so please humor me. He wants to know what kind of milk shake?
glad you finally found the part. through regular parts stores they probably were discontiniued, I checked two manufacturers catalogs and couldn't find anything (wells and bwd)
Yep, some parts guys will go the extra mile and some won't give you the time of day.
The really good ones order parts from Japan - Japan keeps a much better stock of old parts.
I hope that chocolate milkshake isn't under the oil cap - I've had that type too many times
yeah I've worked on the counter of two autoparts stores and I can say guys at regular parts stores are the same way, they'll either go out of their way or just not try to help in anyway. I dont even bother having anybody look up parts anymore if I dont have to. I just give part numbers.
