Toyota Celica wont start after running out of gas.

Hi there, i recently purchased a Toyota Celica 1991, with a 3sge 2.0 motor. It had an overheating problem fixed by replacing the thermostat. The other night, it got well below E on petrol, and basically ran out. I put petrol in (about 15 litres) and that night it kept feeling like it was running out of gas. (ie, cutting out at lights and taking a bit to get it started etc). Now it only kicks over for a second and dies. (runs for between half to 2 seconds then dies). Ive checked the pump, filter and lines for flow and function etc. Now stuck for ideas as to whats wrong. Thanks

Hi there again, no offense to the fellow Celica community, but a VERY POOR offort in attempting to answer such a simple question (especially after finding this forum by Googling "best Toyota forum in world". I posted a similar question in a Toyota Forum in little old New Zealand and had several replies within 24 hours.

Nevertheless im still stuck :S

After doing the above, I read the fault codes from the car. Gives me code 14 (ignition circuit fault). So after that, I have replaced Igniter, Coil, Distributor rotor and cap.

Im at a loss as to what else could cause the car to kick over once and dies instantly. Thanks in advance for your usual promt and informative replies :P

lol the level of knowledge in this forum is astoundingly low, even from reading other posts. But ill keep my head up and hope someone with knowledge about cars comes along and finds my post to help me.

MORE INFO: This morning I disconnected the CPU plugs, and reconnected them. After connecting them I got code 12 from the MIL. Which points to the CPU or dizzy. As the previous code i got (14) also pointed to the CPU (and ignitor) I decided to replace the CPU today. After doing to, the problem is still the same.

Also note that when the code is 14, the car fires for a second and dies, when the code is 12, it wont fire AT ALL, but still turns over either way.

PLEASE HELP

ok well if you haven't noticed this section is pretty dead. look at the corolla and camry sections those are pretty well alive so there is good info to be had on this forum just sadly not too much going on in this section.

One thing probably scaring away most is the fact that you have a 3sge (which never made it to north america where most on this forum are probably from.

now you said you checked the fuel issue? did you have pressure at the fuel rail?

first thing I would think would be the dizzy or the coil but its hard because you actually never gave too many specifics on the problem so help is a little tough to find like that.

how does it run before it dies? dies it die suddenly? or does it spudder then die?

Hi there, thanks, yeah good point. I guess I was just a little frustrated, as Im used to replies in forums within hours normally, even if they dont know the answer lol when it gets into the days problems are normally sorted already :S And sorry I never knew about you guys not getting the motor:S

And yes as stated above, the fuel system has been checked for pressure and flow. There are only 2 possibilities left I think, as you say, the Dizzy, and the (i think very unlikely, the TPS??). Its 7am on Saturday, and I cant sleep, so I think ill try the dizzy today. If it doesnt work il probably scrap the car lol. It was only a couple hundred dollars anyways.

PS Thanks for replying BTW

first of all I did read. I was saying what I would first think it would be based on the info you supplied. and about the pressure in the rail, I said that to elimate the fuel system, you just said you checked it, I deal with people all day saying that and all they did was look at the filter so I was just making sure because your posts were vague.

SPEAKING OF WHICH you still haven't answered MY question, about how it dies and how it runs before hand

edit: Also, remember this is a forum, its free and these are opinions from people willing enough to spend THEIR time on YOUR problem, you could just as easily pay someone to guess at it. Expecially in a dead section like this dont just act like an answer is owed to you, yes it is nice if you get one but still remember this

I know you said you checked the fuel pump, but it's not uncommon after running out of gas that the pump can die..... happened to a civic I once owned.

Thats sounds so much what Im going through right now with my 74 celica...I know there's a bit of an age difference here but mine runs for awhile then dies out. As it dies it does sputter out like its running out of gas. I am taking my tank out and having it dipped and should be ready next week. It had a redish color and flakes in it but only showed up when shaken. Before that I did all what you did and more, this was my last ditch effort and it looks like I have found the answer.

Do you have a clear (glass) fuel filter so you can see whats going through your line?

Honestly it sounds as though your filter is plugged or your pump is on its way out. Possibly a combination of both.

this is a very good possiblity because of all the sedaments that settle to the bottom of the tank. when you run in dry the pump will pick all of this up and send it through... i would change the filter and pump

Did you replace the filter? which would be the cheapest way. If that dosent work and the pump does well...possibility it may of got up in to the carb. just shootin some ideas your way
