Question '95 2.0l GT Celica - Gearbox? Problems

Hi.
I need a bit of help on a problem I am having.
I have a '95 2.0l GT Celica Import and I am having problems with 3rd gear. When I engage gear quickly there is a "CLUNK" and ocassionally a very slight grind,( not a lack of clutch grind ), as it goes into 3rd - it doesn't go in smoothly at all.
The strange bits - It ONLY happens when the engine is cold, it ONLY happens in 3rd and it ONLY happens when you engage the gear quickly. It DOESN'T happen at all when the engine has warmed up a bit, it DOESN'T happen if you engage gear very slowly, and it DOESN'T happen in any other gears. I originally thought it was the gearbox, but why would it be fine when the engine has warmed up??? It has been suggested to only change gear slowly in the future, but where's the fun in that?
Any help urgently appreciated.
Cheers, DJC.

Celica gearboxes are known to have weak synchros. Mine started like that but now grinds badly if I'm not carefull.

If that is indeed the problem, is the only option to cure it a new gearbox?

You can get new synchronisers(sp?) by themselves. They're pretty expensive to have put in though. The whole transmission has to be torn down and put back together with the new parts.

As far as it being a major problem, I have a different transmission than you, but it's lasted 80,000 miles so far with that grinding. I've gotten used to being carefull about the way I shift, so I don't even think about it anymore and can do it pretty quick without it grinding.

Try switching to a good synthetic tranny fluid, GM Syncromesh works the best, I've also had Redline in my tranny but it didn't work as well.

I've had a browse for that type, but can't seem to get any results in the UK. Anyone know of a good type available in the UK?
Cheers, DJC.

It should be available at a GM dealer in the UK.

I am reviving this forum....... Hopefully I won't have to start a new thread. I did a search for syncromesh and this is what I found.

QUESTION: My dad just bought a convertable 2.2L eingine.... Is GM syncromesh fluid by penzoil going to be okay to try for this tranny type?
I did it for my 1.6L, very happy with the result. Do they both have the same trannies???

sycromesh

No special oil will solve the problem it will only cover it up for a few hundred miles (dodgy sellers do that sort of thing for a quick sale). You can buy the syncros and fit them yourself but be warned the gearbox is not a job for the beginner, if you can do it great but if not a regular mechanic wont touch it so it has to go to a specialist (big money) best off buying a used one. If you let go of the throttle and dip the clutch and let the engine speed start to drop move it into 3rd not too hard and it should go into gear without much trouble it takes a lot of trial and error to get it right but if you can you can make the gearbox last almost forever. Forcing 3rd will only wear down the cogs faster.
