Need help with my 79 Celica, battery was connected backwards

So to make a long story short, I took the battery out of my celica, used it for some things, then put it back in. The battery was put in backwards on accident, and the battery terminals were both hooked up backwards. (Late night wrenching)

The battery post smoked a bunch as soon as I hooked up the positive terminal, but thankfully I was able to quickly pull the terminal off of the battery post before something caught fire. All of the wires that I can see look fine.

Anyways, my question is - What should I be looking to examine/replace to get the car running again? I have replaced both 5A fuses in the fusible link near the battery twice, but they both blow as soon as I try to turn on anything more than a dome light or turn the key to the accessory/on position.

I have checked every fuse that I can find, including the one hidden under the kick panel. All of them are fine, but I think i'll replace them anyways since they're probably pretty old.

I also replaced the positive and negative battery teminals with new ones, and replaced the battery to body ground wire.

I don't have a Haynes manual yet so I've been using toyodiy and googling around for wiring diagrams and similar problems but haven't found anything helpful yet.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Here's some wiring diagrams for early models.
The RA29 diagram is very similar to your '79.
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/...ng%20diagrams/

Pull out ALL fuses except the fusible links.
Put the fuses back in one by one and test that feature by turning it on.
That will narrow down the problem area.

The Haynes manual will be very useful - get it.

Also, get a cheap multimeter or at least a circuit tester.
The circuit tester is just a globe in a nice plastic pen-like case and a wire to attach to ground.
Attach the wire to the body and touch the end of the probe to something of interest - it will light up if the something has power to it.
Or do the reverse, connect the wire to +12V and then probe things to see if they are connected to ground.
