Lightbulb New engine or rebuild

Hey guys, i got a question about which route to take. Well i ran my celica with out oil last week and now im have to replace it. But ive got a friend that is mechanic and he says its better to just rebuild the engine, but im not shure hows that guna work out. Im still trying to figure out if i want to replace the engine with an engine from a junk yard or rebuild the currrent one. My friend told me all i had to replace was the crank shaft.

If the engine is relatively low-mileage, and you have a friend to help keep the rebuild cost down, it may be worth it to salvage the original engine.

If you have access to a wrecker's lower-mileage engine, and the price is right, that's your best bet. JDM low-mileage engines tend to be about $1000 shipped.

A good question that I forgot to ask...a 1.6L (4AFE) would be waaaayyyyy cheaper to buy than a 2.2L (5SFE).

Sounds like a good excuse for a 2zz gts swap. Finding a replacement is going to be a bit harder and more expensive in older generations. In this case, it may be cheaper to rebuild the engine than to buy a new one, particularly if you can do it yourself or know someone who can do it cheap.

It could be. but honestly, the OP sounds like he would just like to replace his engine, not get involved with a big swap.

IMHO I'd first check around locally for an engine. Any 1zzfe will work as long as you pick one with or without VVTi (depending on if you already have that or not). The were used fairly commonly from celicas, corollas, the matrix, even the pontiac vibe. If your friend is confident in rebuilding engines then you could probably make out a fair bit cheaper if you can get a hold of a rebuild kit. If not, I would just look for a used low mileage engine.

Could prossibly try through japanese engine importers as well, but I do not know the 1zz's availability through any, I've never looked for anything newer than a 20v silvertop 4AGE
