4afe: 2nd gen in place of 1st?

i have a 92 celica st 4afe. bad knock, so i am going to use the 4a from a 94 geo prizm. i currently have the old motor hanging by 1 mount and the wiring harnesses look quite different. could i use the harness from the 1st gen on the 2nd gen motor and swith over all the sensors?

Try reuse all electrical from your car.Keep any parts that you're not sure. Basically use the long block.

HAHA! i got the motor in, had to swap the dizzy and a few sensors and it runs!.... crappy, i have a few issues with the vaccuum lines and fuel return line, but i think that swapping the intake from the original will clear all that up.
bugs should be worked out soon......

it looks like it might, but the studs coming from the block are shorter than the originals. i'll have to try it and swap the studs..... and i still have loads of air in my coolant sys. dont know how to bleed it...

Victory!!!!

i am currently driving my project car. total cost was 500 bucks and its got brand new tires. only three minor problems: no temp guage, no fuel guage, and very lukewarm heat... that and the radiator fan stays on. other than these little things, the car doesnt do anything out of the ordinary. i'm going to guess my heater core is plugged, but who knows....
so let it be known that both generations of the 4afe are almost completely inter-compatible, save for the dizzy and the thermostat housings. car is getting 34 mpg in the winter including a little horsing around
150000miles and hopefully i'll end up doubling that number, provided the 200000mi prizm motor will hold up, eh eh....

are you using the original temp sender?

and it just sounds like the car may be running cool, especially if the rad fan just keeps running.

i am using it, but i had my dad install it in the housing. but when he did this he put it in place of the fan switch, and he threw it away cause he thought i didnt need it. but oh well, that doesnt explain why the sender isnt working..... i have both of the other sensors hooked up, but still no temp guage... i think im just gonna run an auxilliary one from Oreillys...

Talking wahhhh?!?!?

so my cars alternator died last nite. started looking online and oreillys was the winner. i asked for a geo prizm 1.6 alt. and sent the wifey to get it. she comes back with an alternator but said it was 25 bucks cheaper?!?! i guess the parts store guy pointed out that the 1.6 alt looked nothing like mine, and brought out the 1.8Lsi alt instead. this one looks exactly the same according to my GF, so does this mean i installed a 7AFE? i thought there was extra wiring or something??? all i did was swap the throttle body, and the distributor! i guess it doesnt matter, the cars back on the road....

usually a 7afe swap requires a fair bit of wiring. Its a chance the system had the listings backwards (I work for Advance and have seen it a few times), or possibly a split year that they changed the alternator or was the parts guy looking up the right year? the LSI started along with the ae102 (93-97), It could be several different things.

Same thing with 7A-FE, swap long block. Reuse all stock electrical and anything that may not work.

im sure it was the same year... but im not too worried...
just a silly question, should i be getting 23mpg city? thats including a little bit of horsing on it, but ive pretty much been babying it, it is a 200000mi motor..(and clutch). i was able to get 34 on the highway, but i thought i should be able to get better than 23 city... jeezz
