what's up w/ this engine

looking through cl and this came up- 1997 Celica GT, what's up w/ the engine- is that thing a filter, can it be replaced w/ a standard filter? From looking at the photo is there any missing or modified that influence performance, or the way the car will run and sound- I'm not completely familiar w/ what a 94-99 celica engine looks like, is that an ABS pump/box in the lower left corner near the windshield fluid?

yeah its a housing for an air filter, you could probably just pull a stock airbox if you wanted to go back. Also there's a header. Check the exhaust, if this was mated to the stock exhaust, it likely eliminated the catalytic converter.

Mm mmm aerosol painted cover and intake...

The ABS controller is in the lower left with the metal tubing coming from the top. The cruise control box gets moved next to the battery when you have ABS.

You are looking at a 3rd Revolution 5S-FE. Should look similar to below, they have a modified exhaust header without the heat shield. I agree with Rob, they've likely cut out the cat.

on that engine you dont have to cut ou the cat it is bolted to the manifold and is removed when equiping an ebay header.

aftermarket header

True.

I was just trying to get the OP to cover all his bases. Many of the headers I've seen for this eliminated the cat, but it does look like an ebay header.
