I'm not 100% on the swapping of the gas tanks but I am sure it won't be a direct swap but it shouldn't be too bad because both gas tanks are mounted as far back as possible given both cars have a diff at the rear so the tanks will be mounted behind the diff.
As far as using the 5M-GE engine from the celica supra in the 88 celica. Well anything will fit with money. In this case you would need to make new engine mounts because the new engine will not nearly bolt straight up. You'll need all the wiring, ecu etc from the celica supra. New fuel lines will probably need to made up. Will need the fuel pump from the celica supra. Will either need to a custom driveshaft made because the one from the celica supra will be too short for a direct bolt it. As for clearance in the engine bay for it to fit I am not 100% sure on this either. The 88 celica's engine is mounted transverse (east to west) while the celica supra's engine is horizontal mounted (north to south) so you'll have to make some measurements. The front end (hubs) will need to be changed also; ones on the alltrac use CV-joints (its AWD) but the celica supra is RWD. This is all I could come up with right now, I am by all means no expert at this. I am still learning.
In short, swapping engine will be ALOT of work and will require a lot of know-how to do it and alot of money if you're not doing it yourself.
In my opinion I would keep the alltrac like it is. Those cars are getting more and more rare to find and to find stock. Anyone with a alltrac; either 4th,5th or 6th generation version will demand you keep it AWD and either tell you too keep it stock or do the common swap of upgrading the 1st gen. 3S-GTE engine to either a 2nd or 3rd gen or if you have a lot of money a 4th gen 3S-GTE engine swap. These alltracs have a lot of history so keeping them stock will make them very valuable in the future.
If you want more info or opinions on your swap you should head over to "www.alltrac.net". Huge community over there and will easily be able to answer any of your questions.
Hope some of this helps!
