Shifter cable?

Never posted in the celica forums before lol but I will now since my love is getting a 1994 celica gt (auto). One thing is though, is that the car won't start sometimes unless you move the shifter a little under "park". The guy said his mechanic looked at it and wants $400 for the job. He says its some type of shifter cable that goes from the shifter to the transmission. Has anyone ever done this? Does the tranny have to be dropped? My guess is that you could probably tear the shifter up and go from there. Does anyone know the name of what I am talking about, or maybe have a price window?

Thanks in advance
