Noisy Celica

I have a 2000 Celica GT with 5 speed transmisson. There is a noise when driving noticeable when accel/decel not when coasting/maintaining. Not heard when clutch pedal pressed. It's a grinding/growling noise. Could it be a clutch, tranny, or cv joint problem.

How many miles do you have on her? Do you hear this noise especially as you begin to release the clutch, trans. in 1st gear, such as taking off from a start? Does the clutch feel the same (as far as pedal position when the clutch starts to engage) as you have felt it for most of the time you've had it, before the noises started? Have you checked the oil level in the transmission lately?

140000 miles. Noise is when in 4th and 5 gear. Clutch feels fine. Oil level okay.

I had noise in 4th and 5th too, but it turned out to be a leaky seal that had all but emptied the gear oil...filled it back up and the noise went away (aside from internal gear whine I had a rattling release fork when the fluid was low).

You may be in for a rebuild, if the transmission fluid is filled to the top of the fill plug. Try draining a bit of fluid and see if there are metal shavings in it. If there are, it'll look iridescent like metallic paint...
