the 2.2 is plenty of fun with a small turbo. Hell, portmatch the stock manifold and make an adapter to bolt a GTI turbo onto it (GTI turbo from vw 1.8 gas motors and some audi models). on teh honda d16z6 fully stock, it can pull over 5psi before it hits 1100 revs. thats outstanding considering the mediocre compression on teh z6 and teh flow of the stock intake manifold. with a Y8 manifold and ebay log tubro manifold, it spools at roughly 900.
this was done on a freshly rebuilt KKK/K03 (not sure of exact model of turbo. was pulled form a 2001 vw gti i believe)
the 2.0 swap is not 00-06 and easier to find. plus boost=awesome!
or you could try your hand at the v6 swap. your tranny bolts up, you make a new timing belt mount,, fab a bracket for the half shalf, or you can make it easier by using alltrac hubs and outer axles for a bit more state of mind.
a honda motor would be pointless. Im a big honda guy, I can tell you straight up the 2.2 5sfe compares and spanks the H22 honda motor. it achieves MORE horsepower and MORE torque at a useable level then teh H motor. PEAK NUMBERS MEAN NOTHING!!! lol keep that in mind please. Like all honda 4 cylinders, you have to go into teh upper rev range to make your peak power and torque. the 5sfe makes it in the 3k-4k rev range. Yeah it has more sideloading and a worst RTSR then teh honda motors, but teh design is more reliable, the same block can be found in over 10 years of toyota, making parts VERY cheap, and easy to work with jsut like the hondas.
Personally, if I were in your shoes, I would go for teh V6 swap since it would give me over 200whp and over 200wtq, for less money then JUST buying the H swap. the cable shifting doesnt match up 100%, the motor and tranny switch sides, the wiring is a PAIN when ALL wiring is different colors and configurations (sensor wiring and such)
I would not mind seeing this come to pass, but I question your viewpoint on the sheer amount of effort and money you will use.
My brothers 91 GTS with teh 2.2 is running pig rich form some valve or sensor problem, and its still spanked a friends H23 swapped 91 hodna accord. that car is lighter then the celica. he passed us (me and brother) around 90mph. was from a 30 roll in lowest gear possible, and I only took my brotehrs car to what the speedo said 95 or 100mph. Im not fond of doing highway pulls or driving like an idiot, but it was nice to find a comparison for teh car, as Im not yet fully familiar with toyota specs and such
I do know several good sites for wiring diagrams, so if you do decide to go forward, I would be happy to assist
