new 89 gt engine ? with pics

Ok im the proud new owner of a 89 celica gt. My first of many Questions is the car has 189,000 on it but the engine blew at 94k and was replaced with a new crate all the engine thats in it now says on top is toyota 16 valve could someone tell me what engine i most likely have or if it could be anything where i can find some #s on it that would tell me.
Second ? is what you guys think i should upgrade first and i need bolt on as I live in a emissions county and will need to go back to stock once a year for 3 more years till i'm a classic and don't have to have it anymore.

My first guess would be a 3sfe.

pictures would definitely help.

And I'd say just leave it alone mostly mods wise. bolt ons rarely gain you any more than a placebo effect and maybe a marginal power increase.

yep looks like a 3sfe to me.

5sfe cams may work but those would be the most dramatic upgrade. You can do smaller stuff like intake and exhaust. They do free it up a little, you wont feel a huge difference but it'll feel a little peppier and you'll get a nice sound. You can also take a look around celicatech's NA section for more suggestions.
