System 10 Stereo System 1990 Celica Gt-s

I Have A System 10 Stereo System In My 1990 Celica Gt-s. I Have Had The Door Bass Speakers Replaced (with After Market Which Fit Perfectly). The Radio Plays Great, The Problem I Am Having Is With The Cd And Cassette Players. When I Insert A Cd, I Can Slight Hear Music Coming From The Slot The Cd Is In, But No Sounds Comes From The Speaker. Same With The Cassette Player. I Can Hear The Tape Moving, But No Sound. I Local Toyota Dealer Told Me I Could Bring The Car In And If Can Ship The Stereo System Out And Have It Rebuilt For $250.00 (which I Am Willing To Do). However Has Anyone Else Had This Problem And Know What It Could Be.

No, but I would be interested to learn what the problem is too. I have a several System 10 head units, which I want to have 1 or 2 spares for my convertible. One of them acts similarly to yours, except there is sound, just a lower volume level on CD & cassette compared to the radio. Another has good radio volume, but the left side speakers on cassette and CD are much lower in volume with the right side normal, on CD & cassette. Sort of puzzling. I do have 2 other units that operate just fine. What I can tell you is that it is not the CD or cassette mechanisms causing it (I've switched mine around between units, and the volume issue remains even though CD and cassette mechanisms are swapped).

Good luck, let me know what you find out.

System 10 Issue

The Local Toyota Dealer Said They Can Send It Out To Have It Rebuilt For $250.00. I Know That This Is More Than An Aftermarket Unit, But I Am Restoring The Gt-s To Original Condition. I'll Keep You Posted.

You know that you can always buy a used head unit (identical to yours) from places like ebay for a lot less than the $250 you would be giving Toyota to fix your current unit.

There is one listed on ebay now, for a total of $200 (including shipping). That is not much less than the getting yours repaired, but it is a little less. It only has 2 days left in the auction. Ebay item number 370337061757. Often you can get units for <$50, but there is the risk that there is a problem with the units, so you have to deal with a seller who is willing to take defective units back and give you your money back.

Just a thought.
