engine blocks

someone once told me that the celica GT and GTS engines are practically the same.

this sounds like utter bullshit.
I could see how they could share the same block, and hence have similar bore and stroke, but there seems to be in my head, no way that the cylinder heads could be the same.

i mean, the cam design, the head design...everything would have to be different no?

can anyone substantiate my engine block hypothesis? i know that the engines are different. 1mzzfe and 2msomethingfe

Which year specifically? Out of the fwd Celicas in North America it goes like this,

4th gen - GTS (3SGE) and GT (3SFE) shared a block but little else, the ST had a different engine for '86 (2SE?) and then used the 3SFE 87' and on, which is again the same block. The difference between the GT/GTS is the 'G' head, compression, redline, HP/TQ, etc. Big difference.

5th/6th gen - Were exactly the same in either GT or GTS (5SFE) trim, bottom and top ends.

The 7th gen uses a very similar block for both, but everything else is completely different. 1ZZFE for the GT and 2ZZGE for the GTS. These engines again are far apart, the 1ZZ makes about 130HP while the 2ZZ makes 180, they share only the block and some misc electronics.

One difference between all GTS' and GT's is gearing and/or tranny choice.
