Need help- 94 Celica ST CV joint stuck in transaxle

I am attempting to remove the CV joints from the transaxle and they are not coming out. They are not the flanged CF joints, they are the splined inner ends and mymanual says they should just come out easily. Well they are not. I have pounded, yanked, tapped, tried everything, they are not coming out. Is there a snap ring or something that I'm missing? Help!

'94 with a 7A-FE and manual trans.

should be just about the same as the CV on the corolla I owned (4afe), I could always get it out with just a prybar between the tulip and the transmission case.

There is a snap ring on the end of the shaft spline inside the transaxle. You can only see it when the shaft is removed. It is seated in a groove in the female spline of the transaxle. They can sometimes have a pretty good grip. the only way to get it out is with a pry-bar placed between the steel tulip of the joint and the transfer case, or by pushing the shaft in slightly (no further than an inch as you can dislodge the joint) and giving a hard quick pluck straight out. Good luck.
