Gen5 OEM Toyota Keys

do any of you guys know if the key blanks that a Toyota dealership makes is a exact stock one? i use to have a stock one for my 1990 celica that has the word Toyota on the black plastic but my wife lost it and looking to replace it with stock one instead of one of those smaller headed plastic ones you make at walmart or local hardware stores..

The dealer should have a selection of blanks in the OEM style, although sometimes they may be slightly different from the older vehicles' blanks. Still, they will be genuine Toyota keys, not keys that simply look similar.

Additionally, they grind them according to the VIN, which means they will be exactly like a factory new key, rather than having been ground by using your (most likely worn) key as a physical guide (which means you don't even NEED your key to get a new key made).

Most dealerships should have scads of those blanks in stock. Go to the Parts counter and ask to see them.

Also, if you have only a "master" key on your keyring, get them to make you a subkey for your keyring, and keep the "master" on a separate ring or in your wallet. The subkey will open the doors and work in the ignition, which makes it great to hand to the valet or the mechanic (keeps them out of the trunk and locking glovebox (if equipped).

The master key opens all doors/trunk/glovebox; you don't want the oil change guy rooting around your trunk.

Actually there are two Toyota dealers here that I call and didn't have those keys in stock but had to special order them. I don't have the master key anymore since it was lost so I hope when the blank comes in, the dealer will make me a copy of the master.

It's your car (well, if you can prove it's your car), so they'll order either a master or subkey blank (the master/sub designation is determined from the start according to the blank, to prevent a subkey from being 'upgraded' to master).
