1989 celica gt(before i buy)

hello im looking to buy this 1989 toyota celica gt, current owners telling me it need a crank shaft seal and and saying that i could get the work done to the car for 150$ at local shops. Am i getting told the truth? Is it hard that i couldnt do it myself? How much am i looking at?

Hi: Did they specify if it was the front or rear? If it is the rear, it will be expensive, since the tranny generally needs to be reomved to get to it and replace it. If it is the front, it won't be as expensive as the rear, but still parts will need to be removed to get to it. I believe it is behind the timing belt cover. The seal itself is not expensive, the cost comes in the labor. It will be more than $150 to do the job, if you go to a mechanic. If you're mechanically inclined you can do the job yourself. Better it be the front than the rear seal, though. In any event, use that as your bargaining tool to talk down the price

hes told me he would let the car go for 450$, should it start if the seals just bad? can any damage be done when a seal goes bad? Im going to have to ask if its rear or front.

as long as theres oil in the engine you wont do any real damage. overtime yes, but to test it no. over time a front leaking seal and ruin the timing belt and cause it to fail. if the back is bad enough is can affect your clutch.

both are fairly labor intensive jobs.
